Worship Service Set list & Recap: April 19, 2009

base-image-wcWhat a sweet service!  I really appreciate the servants on the worship team at East Valley.  They minister to me in a HUGE way and make leading worship such a joy!  Today flowed well – it just seemed like one continuous worship session right from the start of the service countdown.  I really love it when I don’t have to strictly concentrate on the logistics (the Holy Spirit is always in control, but I think you know what I mean.)

Set list:

  • Opener: Come, Now is the Time to Worship [Doerksen]
  • Indescribable [Story]
  • For These Reasons [Brewster]
  • Take My Life and Let it Be (Passion version) [HAVERGAL (Arrangement. & additional lyrics Tomlin & Giglio]
  • Closer: Medley – Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) / Heart of Worship / I Surrender All  [Medley: Arriaga / AG: Newton, Rees and Excell (Arr & addl chorus TOMLIN & GIGLIO) / HoW: Redman / ISA: Van De Venter & Weeden]

Recap:

You can’t go wrong with Come Now is the Time as an opener.  Although, sometimes I do it as the closer – just to remind us that the worship doesn’t stop when the service ends…

I like linking songs or having a lyrical progression in the service (hopefully others appreciate this too.)  I really like the way Indescribable, For These Reasons, and Take My Life… move from the adoration of God as creator, to describing (and reminding us) of the reasons for our response of worship (gathered and scattered / at church and away from church), to a song of total surrender of every part of our lives!  AMEN!

I like the Passion version of Take My Life – mainly because I find that when a familiar song’s arrangement is changed, it forces me to really concentrate on the lyrics (I hope it wasn’t too much of a distraction to those at church.)  Plus, I really like the added chorus!  This was the second time we sang this arrangement – we probably won’t go back to the traditional one.

The closer medley is something that came to me about a month ago (this was the second time we’ve done this medley).  I always like to have a song of commitment or responding action at the end of the service (if possible) and was planning the set for March 22 – torn between these three songs for the closer and said, “why not combine them!”  It passed my “wife test” (very important to me!) so I plugged it in…I think it went well [all songs in the key of D]:

Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see

My chains are gone I’ve been set free
My God my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love amazing grace

Heart of Worship

So I’ll bring You more than a song,
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required.
You search much deeper within,
Through the way things appear;
You’re looking into my heart.

I Surrender All

And I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee my blessed Savior
I surrender all

Pastor John was away – Pastor Andaya spoke from Philemon – a book he said that is often forgotten about (which is true – I can’t recall the last time I heard a message from it…and haven’t read it in a while).  Great message – I’ll probably write a post on my take-away, so not a bunch of details here (thanks JIM!)

If you’re reading this and don’t come to East Valley, hope your Sunday was blessed – if you’re in the Evergreen area of San Jose sometime…stop on by!

AMEN!
