The Recap:
Familiar songs this week. We did try a new arrangement of In Christ Alone from Ike Ndolo’s album (listen to it here). No lyrical change (as Hammer would say, “Can’t touch this [song]!”) – just a little faster tempo. I like this arrangement in that it enables the song to placed at the beginning of a set and it is 1:15 shorter than the original tempo version. Given that we have a 60-minute service goal, 1:15 is valuable time. I think it went OK – we’ll use both arrangements, given the appropriate setlist slot.
I started the service with a responsive reading from Psalm 62 – a Saturday-night add after some reading I was doing. I completely forgot about it at the start of second service! Thanks to Carol’s urging, we added it after our greeting time and it was a great lead in to In Christ Alone.
Pastor John challenged us with a New Years-themed message about Daniel’s resolve as seen in chapters one, two, and six of the book of Daniel.
Some of my one-line notes that I will be chewing on this week:
- Daniel formed his resolve first – he didn’t have a “take it as it comes” attitude.
- King Nebuchadnezzar tried to press Daniel in to the mold of the Babylonian culture – Daniel was resolved to stay true to his purpose in God (Ch1 & 2). Darius the Mede’s decree tried much the same with the same results (ch 6).
- Daniel’s resolve was enabled by his communion with God and his companionship with others.
- Daniel knew his purpose and God’s plan for him. Circumstances didn’t change either.
- From the tombstone of Lord Lawrence, in Westminter Abbey: “He feared man so little because he feared God so much.”
