Insulation Loss

I have cold hands.  Freaky cold…

OK, they’re not cold all the time, but pretty much most of the time.

They are cold enough that I warn people about it before I shake hands with them.  Most people smile and think, yeah right; but when I shake their hand, I can see the truth on their face as we’re shaking…wow, they are cold!

The other day I had my 6-month check-up with my doctor – I’ve been on a 6-month rotation ever since I had a “heart scare” in 2009.  My report was great: weight down, numbers good, etc.  Anyway, I asked her about my cold hands: Was there anything wrong?  Was there something I’m not seeing?  Is there a solution?

She pretty much said that I didn’t have anything wrong – nothing to worry about.  I just need to make sure that I keep my “core” warm and use gloves proactively.

She then shared that the main cause was probably my – and here, she paused and chuckled – “loss of insulation” … my recent weight loss.

I smiled…

It just struck me funny as I’ve joked about being “well insulated” when talking about my weight many times before…

Now I have medical confirmation of that “insulation” claim as an identifiable benefit.  Though it is, of course, outnumbered by the known detriments.

‘scuse me – gonna put my gloves back on…
