“Look how you’re standing”
– My wife to me
“Look how she’s pushing that cart”
– Me to my wife
“[BUUURRP] Excuse me”
– Me to my wife
Three seemingly unrelated statements that are actually quite similar. You see, they relate to a few of the things that recently reminded me of my mom and dad:
“Look how you’re standing” – I guess I sometimes stand like my mom used to. I don’t knowingly do it and, as I type this, can’t really recreate it at will. I just do it sometimes. That said, when I do stand like her, quite often Karen will make that statement…and we smile and remember.
“Look how she’s pushing that cart” – We were in a store the other day and a woman came around the corner pushing a shopping cart. To most, this scene would be inconsequential – just one shopper amongst the many. She had her arms crossed, was leaning on the cart’s handle, and pushing the basket through the aisles. Her purse was sitting in the top basket – easily accessible for anything she might need (list, glasses, wallet, medicine, etc.) The thing is, this is exactly how my mom navigated stores when shopping… I pointed this out to Karen…and we smiled and remembered.
“[BUUURRP] Excuse me” – Total transparency here: when I burp, I hear my dad – or rather, I sound like him. OK, not every time I burp (you did know that there are different burps vocalizations); but, once a while when I burp in a particular way, I remember my dad. I know, kind of weird; but when I do it…I smile and remember (and excuse myself, of course).
The basic gist of this post:
Notice the SMALL stuff just as much as the BIG!
Memories are cherished – all of them. Big and small, hugely important and seemingly insignificant memories provide sweet reminders about loved ones.
Make sure to look (and listen) for them each day…and smile and remember.
What is a small reminder of a loved one who’s passed away that you’ve done or heard lately?
