Me, Ed McMahon, and a Restroom

The WordPress, thedailypost.com post prompt on Wednesday was “Describe your first encounter with a celebrity.”

…while this may not be my first celebrity encounter, it was memorable none the less.

Approximate Date: February 2004

Place: Bellagio Hotel & Casino, Osterio del Circo, Las Vegas.

Celebrity: Ed McMahon

The Story

I was in Las Vegas for a business meeting and Karen came along for the trip (the chance to stay at the Bellagio was hard to pass up.)  We didn’t have a view of the strip or The Fountains, but it was an experience.  Catching “O” from the 4th row was an experience as well!

Anyway, partway into one of the group dinner functions, Karen excused herself to use the restroom.  My wife is celebrity junkie and she came back excited that she had seen Ed McMahon checking in at the restaurant.  We joked about it and went on with our meal.

A little while later, I excused myself and headed to the restroom.  Upon entering the restroom and proceeding to the bank of urinals, I noticed a somewhat familiar person next to me: Ed McMahon.  We exchanged an obligatory smile and nod*, he moved to the sink, then left.  I followed suit, but when I left the restroom, he’d gone back to his table.  I went back to our table and shared my encounter with Karen and our table mates…laughs all around.

Further along into dinner, I again excused myself and went to the restroom.  Upon entering, who should I meet again: Mr. McMahon, I presume?  Obligatory smile and nod, etc. – story shared with my table mates.

I didn’t use the restroom again…the jokes about my having a McMahon-like constitution had nothing to do with my hesitation.

What’s your celebrity encounter story?

*A Hiyoooo! was not exchanged.  Guys understand this limited and nonchalant attitude – ladies, you may not be hip to this.
