“I” Will Overcome

December 21, 2009 — 1 Comment

One day last week, I was deciding what music to listen to on the way home from work and realized that it had been a while since I listened to Charlie Hall.  A few touches on the old iPhone and voila, On the Road to Beautiful was playing!

Track one  – I Will Overcome – always gets me; and that day I hit the repeat button a few times…

The lyrics so reflect my heart lately.  No I’m not a basket case – I’m just someone who realizes that there is absolutely no way I can make it on my own.  I love and so appreciate the support and encouragement of my wife, family, and friends; but that really pales in comparison to the comfort and true strength I enjoy, cherish, and rely on from my amazing Savior and friend: Jesus.  (BTW, that last sentence is not a slight on my wife, family, and friends – they know my heart and the truth of that statement.)

Blessed Be THE Name

December 7, 2009 — 2 Comments

Resting on this truth today:

“We put our hope in the LORD. He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, LORD, for our hope is in you alone.”

Psalm 33:20-22

Amazing Hope Giver,

You are all knowing, all powerful, all sufficient,…You are perfect.

I know it.

I trust it.

Blessed be Your amazing name!

I was reflecting on Francis Chan’s “Crazy Love” at Lunch…

God is all-powerful. (from chapter 1, “Stop Praying”)

For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.

– Paul to the Church at Colossae (Collosians 1:16)

Don’t we live instead as though God is created for us, to do our bidding, to bless us, and to take care of our loved ones? – Chan

“His dominion is an eternal dominion; His kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: ‘What have You done?’ ”

– King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:34-37)

Can you worship a God who isn’t obligated to explain His actions
to you?

Abba, Father:

At times, my human inclination to the often-hard-to-grasp truth of Your omnipotence is to the echo the Disciple’s statement, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”  I pray that, through the power of the Holy Spirit and based on the truth of Your inherent and strong Word, my faith would be strengthened when my human view and questions cloud things.

You are God…i am not. May my worship not be contingent on my full understanding of Your ways and thoughts.

easy btnI have one of these on my desk.  I’ve had it for a while, although it did get pushed to the back by magazines and papers (I have some piles…don’t judge me).  As I was cleaning the desk the other day, I saw it and got to thinking about how, if we are honest with ourselves (and God), we would much rather have something like this in life than depend completely upon God or even come before Him in prayer.

We are in good company.  In Mark 9:14-29, we see that Jesus’ disciples (the ones He picked to follow Him first), still occasionally defaulted to primarily relying on their own ability (sound familiar?).  In this passage, we read that they couldn’t cast out a demon from a possessed child…and the crowds and the boy’s father are not happy.  The bible doesn’t describe that scene, but can you imagine the disciple’s frustration and repeated attempts?  Not to be sacrilegious, but the image of trying to start a lawnmower repeatedly comes to mind…

Number One: A Reading

I usually read The Daily Bread at some point each day and today’s reading was great.

I won’t retype it here (click here to read it for yourself), but what a gut check to even consider having the attitude that Job had in 2:10: “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?”

I’m “all over” the GOOD stuff and my adversities are pretty tame compared to some (especially after reading a Tweep’s post about here trip to India – truly CRAZY LOVE in action).  I pray that I would be enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit to have this Job-itutde [ok, so now God will provide me an opportunity…].
