Is This My Response?

As I’ve written before, thought-provoking lyrics are my thing…

Every time I hear the two lines below from John Mark McMillan’s Dress Us Up, I am encouraged and convicted.

In a comparative reference between the account of Mary and Jesus’ interaction and our responsive worship, McMillan wrote:

When You walk into the room You know we can’t resist
Every bottle of perfume always ends up on the floor in a mess

Encouraged

Those lines are a reminder to me of the fact that God is present and approachable.  Think about that – Present AND Approachable.

That’s HUGE.

I’ve been reading through Leviticus and Numbers lately.  The process and manner in which the people of God approached Him and the way He interacted with them compared to my “torn curtain”-enabled interaction is incredible.  I have the Christ-bought privilege to talk with the Creator of the universe at any given time of my choosing, no matter my heart’s condition or the place I happen to be.  I can approach Him without shedding blood, baking bread, or lighting incense – with full confidence that He not only hears me, but also loves, cares, comforts, strengthens, encourages, … and the list goes on.

Simply amazing.

Convicted

Yet, for all my amazement, I am at the same time terribly convicted.

How often my worship of God – both gathered and personal – lacks a “perfume bottle breaking”-like response.

I’m often too casual.  I can be careless.

I can become disinterested. I’m easily distracted.

I’m often under or unappreciative.

I’m “tidy” instead of undone or undignified.

I’m convicted and guilty; yet, He is still present and approachable…and loves, cares, comforts, strengthens, encourages, … and the list goes on.

Simply amazing.

Heavenly Father,

I am amazed at and grateful for the love and grace You’ve shown and continue to show me.  Your sacrifice enabled my unhindered worship of You.  Forgive me for the many times I lack a “perfume bottle breaking”-like response in worship.

Amen

Amen, Dennis. This is so true of all of us, my friend. But more to the point, I think it’s super easy for Worship Leaders to fall into that state of being too casual, complacent, and disinterested because of the frequency, in which, we go through motion of worship. I loved your prayer. I prayed that right along with you.

May God continue to bless your ministry in His Name!

    Wayne
