I got my May StrideBox last week; but, with the stomach virus that I had, didn’t really get to look at it until last night. If you are not familiar with StrideBox, it’s basically a goodie/sampler box of running “accessories, nutritional products, and apparel” that you get each month for a $15 subscription.
As you can see, the box contained a great variety of products this month, anchored by the great shoe clip! After looking everything over, I’ll definitely use/try almost everything included.
Products and Comments:
- Bars: Two from this category included this month, Betty Lou’s Just Great Stuff Bar and a Bonk Breaker Bite (smaller version of the bars.) There are pretty standard items, and I will def eat/enjoy them. I’m a pretty solid supporter/user of Picky Bars, so I don’t think these will replace those full time, but maybe as a back-up. Bottom Line (BL): WILL USE
- Gels: VFuel Endurance. Again, standard item for nutrition, though I am not a fan of peaches, so I will probably pass on this. That said, the differentiators their website describes interest me enough to maybe get a sample pack to try. The kicker here is I really am sold on the “plain” flavor of GU – meaning that I don’t like a conflicting flavor with my electrolyte drink… BL: HMMMM?
- “Chewys”: Two from this category included this month, Jelly Belly Sports Beans and Honey Stinger Cherry Coke Chews. I have tried Sports Beans before, so I’ll use them. Not sure about the Honey Stingers – not because of the product, I’m just not a cherry coke fan…I’m weird/picky that way. BL: WILL USE SBs
- Protein Powder. Perfect Fit Vanilla powder. I really don’t use this type of stuff, so I’m not sure I’ll use… BL: PASS
- Bottle Cleaner. A sample tab of Bottle Bright cleaner. This is definitely one I will use – my bottles have been known to get “yucky”, to quote my wife. Based on their website demo video, my coffee cup needs this too! BL: WILL USE
- Blister Bands. I don’t usually have blister issues (knock wood), but am pretty sure this product works based on my previous experience with Pro-Tec Athletics’ products. I have used their nipple protectors for a long time and the blister protectors are pretty much the same design. Great product – highly recommended. BL: WILL USE
- Footwear Clip by Klitch. This product is great! Simple solution, easy to use – which I will for sure. BL: WILL USE
Box Value? Again, the monthly subscription is $15 and, by my calculation, this month’s sampling totals about $36.27 OTC – a pretty good deal in my book.
There you have it – StrideBox vMay 2013…and it’s another winner!
You can sign up for your monthly StrideBox here!
Training Journal – 5/13/13:
- Current plan: Horseshoe Lake 50K Training Plan
- Today’s session: 6 mile run
- Comments: My knee started bugging me after about a mile. I considered pushing it, but thought I better not with this weekend’s 50K on the horizon. So, I changed this morning to a brisk walk, did a total of 3.38 a 13:32 pace, and am icing the knee today.

Thaaaaaatwouldbeme.
Day four of no running as a result of this stomach virus thing that’s kicked my behind. I went to the doctor today and he said to give it time, befriend Imodium, stay hydrated, and watch what I eat…which I’m doing. My biggest fear has been that I caught a parasite or something after filling my handheld during my run in Alum Rock Park last Sunday (OK, I did use a potable water spigot; but still, imagine the visuals I’ve had!) The doc said he doubted that was the case, but gave me a lab chit just in case things don’t improve by next Tuesday or so (maybe he was just humoring me!) 😉
Twitch? Yeah, this is the longest I’ve gone without a run since October 2011. Yeah, I know those things and I did just twitch a bit.
Anyway, I’m hopeful for tomorrow…!

- Comments: After my run yesterday, I felt good; but, as the day progressed, I started to feel terrible. I seem to have caught the flu or something. So, no running today…actually, not much of anything today.
- Current plan: Big Sur Marathon Recovery Week / Horseshoe Lake 50K Training Plan
- Today’s session: Rest day
- Comments: Slept in until almost 9! On the list for today: Pancakes, grocery shopping, some gardening, and more rest.
what. a. month.
Leading up to the Big Sur Marathon, road running pretty much dominated the mix at 89%, with trail running at 11%, and bicycling at 0%. I also had to travel to Virginia during my final taper week – read: sat in a conference for three days, got focused rest, and ran shorter distances. I even resisted running in Washington D.C. (which was tough!) since that leg was on a rest day.
As far as new equipment, a couple of things this month:
- Arm Sleeves. I wrote about this in two posts (one, two), but the gist of it was that I wanted to wear a short-sleeved shirt for Big Sur, just in case I got warm, and sleeves seemed the best option. I settled on Road Runner Sports’ Smart Sleeves. They worked and are keepers for my runs, rather than wearing long-sleeved shirts.
- Shoes. I picked up a pair of Hoka One One Stinson EVOs this month after reading and researching them. With Big Sur training at the forefront, I only got two runs in with them (one, two); but, based on those runs, I really like them. As I prepare to run my first 50K (May 19), I will be logging more time in them and will write a post about them once I have logged sufficient miles.
The biggest thing this month, as far as training, was the decision to go for it and run an ultra in May – specifically the Horseshoe Lake 50K on May 19. I’d been toying with the thought of running an ultra later in the year, but found a few blog posts and articles about leveraging marathon training (and the marathon itself) as preparation for an ultra. After some analysis of my training, how I anticipated Big Sur would go, and the calendar, I decided to register. We’ll see how it goes, but my goal is to have a blast and finish with a smile.
Anyway, here are the stats for the month that was April 2013:
…wee wee wee all the way home!
Yeah, at about mile four this morning, my left piggy was crying!
My piggy, not me. I sucked it up and kept running!
I tried Injinji toe socks on my run yesterday and today and got a blister on the inside of my left baby toe – my first blister in about 15 months! I know people swear by these socks and that they are supposed to prevent blisters, but shoot!!! I’ll probably give Injinjis another try at some point; but, for now, I’m returning to my standby, Roadrunner Sports socks!
