Diagnosis

July 5, 2013 — 2 Comments

Well, my doctor called today with the results from my knee MRI:

  • Knee is fine structurally, though I do have some mild osteoarthritis
  • Iliotibial band is not so good. I have ITB Syndrome, thus the lateral knee pain

He said it’s not enough to merit any medical procedure and recommended that I research some stretches, etc. to address it – as well as being smart about exercise. He liked the fact that I’m bicycling more and taking it easy when I run.

So, I’m researching…

Training Journal – 7/5/13:

  • Current plan: Nothing fancy, just a mix of running and biking right now…with a half marathon on the calendar now!
  • Today’s session: Cross Train: 90 minute bike ride
  • Comments: I rode 25.47 miles @ 16 mph avg. for a time of 1:36:19.

Since today was a holiday and I was off work, I decided to try a trail run. I was a little nervous for two reasons: 1) downhills, and 2) I hadn’t done any trail runs since my 50K back in May. Nervousness aside, I went for it, planning to take it easy and just have a nice run.

I did a home-to-Alum Rock Park-to-home, out and back and it actually felt great to get “off road”, even though my knee reminded me about itself a few times. I just love the fact that I can start and finish a trail run from home!

I ended up doing 11.24 miles at an average pace of 11:14 min/mi for a total time of 2:06:15 and an elevation gain of 1,152 ft.  I even made it home in enough time to run out and get hotcakes from McDonalds – booyah!!!

Anyway, have a safe and enjoyable Fourth!

Training Journal – 7/4/13:

  • Current plan: Nothing fancy, just a mix of running and biking right now
  • Today’s session: 2 hour trail run
  • Comments: See above…

My running “career” is less than two years long and I’ve had numerous highs so far; however, June 2013 was the downer month to date…

It started out with 10-days of rest imposed because of knee issues, followed by a return to running in a new and different way…that has been tough to swallow. My pre-injury average pace of 8:46 (4/12-4/13) has now been replaced by a run/walk program ratio of 3:1 that has resulted in a two-month, average pacing of 10:00. It’s frustrating, to say the least; but at least my doctor is still allowing me to run.  My wife and I have had our share of “new normal” things over the past seven months, so this is just adding to the mix for me.  I’m pressing on, but it still is tough.

I had one business trip this month and I actually had some nice run sessions while in Chicago – logging a total of 55.25 miles over four sessions with a bum knee!

  • HIGH: Ran the San Francisco Marathon – 2nd Half…beating my goal…completing the Half It All Challenge!
  • LOW: My knee issues (same as last month…)

As far as new equipment:

  • I picked up a pair of Hoka One One Bondi Speeds this month.  Having read that they might be easier on my knee(s), I took a chance and ordered a pair (maybe I was reaching.) I have almost 90 miles in them already and really like them. I went with my size (didn’t up-size) and like the fit, though my toes do seem to rub the end of the toe box a bit (read: black toes!) I probably should write a post about them in July…
  • I started using KT Tape on my knee and it seems to help, though it definitely isn’t preventing issues.  I have tried the full knee and outer knee apps and they do seem to help.  I even sacrificed some leg hair!  (OK, maybe this is reaching too.)

Anyway, here are the stats for the month that was June 2013:

Wrigley Run

June 28, 2013 — Leave a comment

Last day in Chicago. Heading home…WooHoo!

I have an afternoon flight today, so I decided to do another longer run. When I ran to the Kwanusila totem pole the other day, I noticed that Wrigley Field was just West of there. So, this morning, I headed up that way along the same route. The weather was perfect this morning and there were TONS of runners out on the return trip, so that was pretty cool.

It’s been nice to run while in Chicago. I’ve had some great workouts, seem to have settled on a 3:1 run/walk ratio with my current knee issues, and put a total of 61.62 miles on the new Hoka Bondi Speeds (6.01 walking (1 session) and 55.25 running (4 sessions.)) Whoa – I didn’t realize how much I’d run while I was here until now! Add to that six days of attending/working at this conference (i.e., sitting on my butt for hours, standing for some too, and walking to/from sessions/my room), and I am ready to go home and rest!

Anyway, have a great weekend!

Training Journal – 6/28/13:

  • Current plan: Not sure right now…looking at options for a run in July
  • Today’s session: Long, slow run
  • Comments: Ended up doing 14.18 miles @ a 10:21 min/mile pace. The 3:1 ratio seems to be a good one, though my knee tweaked at about mile 6 running down a ramp to cross under Lake Shore Drive. After that, I slowed the pace considerably (I had been doing about a 9:20 pace.) My MRI is next week – I’m hoping to know better what to do for my knee…or to at least know that this is the new “normal” for me and running – which I am starting to accept.
  • Current plan: Not sure right now…looking at options for a run in July
  • Today’s session: ???
  • Comments: Rested today. After my 10-mile run yesterday morning, standing/sitting/walking around this conference, and then walking to/from the restaurant last night, my knee was pretty stiff this morning. Back on the run tomorrow…
  • Current plan: Not sure right now…looking at options for a run in July
  • Today’s session: ???
  • Comments: Last night I thought about taking a walk today; but, when the alarm went off this morning, I decided to rest. I’m sure my knee appreciated it. Back on the run tomorrow…

Training Journal – 6/24/13:

  • Current plan: Not sure right now…looking at options for a run in July
  • Today’s session: ?-mile run
  • Comments: Since I’m in between plans right now, I’m just focusing on running lengths of time vs. specific mileage. So, I went for a 2-hour run this morning, which ended up being 12.13 miles @ a 9:48 min/mile pace for a time of 1:58:57. I kept the 3:1 ratio except at around mile 7 I walked the 5 minute interval to rest my knee.  SF 2nd half race report tomorrow…hopefully…I’ve been busy!
