Meant To Be

September 6, 2011 — Leave a comment

Several weeks ago, I shared Matt Redman’s song “Endless Hallelujah” during the offering time at church.  The song has quickly become one of my favorites from his new 10,000 Reasons album [iTunes].

One thing that gets me each time I listen to the song is the phrase:

Ev’rything as it was meant to be

In the context of the song, it’s:

When I stand before Your throne
Dressed in glory not my own
What a joy I’ll sing of on that day
No more tears of broken dreams
Forgotten in the minor key
Ev’rything as it was meant to be

The thing that challenges me in regard to that phrase is the frequent difference between how I feel or expect “things to be” and how God would have them – in His position as Sovereign Lord in my life.

Quite often, miles and miles separate the two…

…and my version of my “story” is without adversity or challenge.

With certainty, God has promised a life with, as the song’s chorus declares,

No more tears, No more shame
No more sin and sorrow Ever known again
No more fears, No more pain

We may enjoy a foretaste of that on earth, but the reality of a life like that – life “as it was meant to be” – will only come in heaven.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

— Revelation 21:3-4 (NIV)

Maranatha!

No Doubt.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 3

Friday and Sunday were HUGE for those who follow Jesus.  Those days, the things that Christ did and accomplished are what distinguish the Christian life and worship from other religions.  We worship a risen savior!

At the some time, it’s easy to get caught observing them, celebrating them in a macro sense: “For God so loved the world…”

I pray that we also observe and celebrate them just as much in a micro sense: “For God so loved <insert your name here>…”

Christ suffered, died, and rose for the world and for each person personally at the same time.

Don’t miss that.

MY REDEEMER LIVETH!

MY REDEEMER LIVETH.
ANON.

“I Know that my Redeemer lives,”
What comfort that sweet sentence gives !
He lives ! He lives ! who once was dead :
He lives, my everlasting Head !
He lives, triumphant from the grave ;
He lives, eternally to save.

He lives, all glorious in the sky;
He lives, exalted there on high;
He lives, to bless me with his love;
He lives, to plead my cause above;
He lives, to upbind and make me whole ;
He lives, to calm my troubled soul.

Cross and Crown

Cross And Crown
ANON.

Jesus, our head, once crowned with thorns,
Is crowned with glory now;
Heaven’s royal diadem adorns
The mighty victor’s brow.

Delight of all who dwell above,
The joy of saints below;
To us still manifest thy love,
That we its depths may know.

I shared John Mark McMillan’s “Death In His Grave” a few months ago during church – a song that has been a favorite since I first heard it.

Like many most all of his songs, McMillan’s “Death In His Grave” is a lyrical masterpiece that prompts reflection and leads in worship…

He recently posted the back-story and line-by-line commentary on this great song on his blog.

Carve a few minutes out today to listen to the song, read his post, and reflect on the amazing gift of God’s Son.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  –John 3:16 (NIV)

Last Sunday – which was Palm Sunday of course – Pastor John shared a bit about what Jesus did during the first part of the week leading up to His crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.

Sometime, I think we disconnect the events of Jesus’ final week on earth because we don’t always see or have a complete narrative in one place (one must read and associate the recorded stories in the four Gospels.)  Jesus and His disciples weren’t just sitting around waiting for Thursday, Friday…or Sunday(!).

I was looking around at lunch and found several Passion Week timelines online, but this one from BibleGateway.com was pretty cool.

I like how it shows the different events, participants, times, places, etc.

This is an amazing week – why not prayerfully consider and reflect upon all that Christ did, endured, and accomplished each day rather then just one or two!

It’s Tuesday…but Sunday’s comin’!

ps: having written this post and now reflecting on Christ’s week, my post from yesterday seems wimpy and whiny…

My Ultimate Debt: Paid

We went to a Matthew Smith and Sandra McCracken concert last night and this song really hit me – especially the last two lines from the bridge:

Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,
By my love, how much I owe.

All I Owe

Words by Robert Murray McCheyne and Matthew Smith
Music by Matthew Smith

When this passing world is done,
When has sunk yon glaring sun,
When we stand with Christ in glory,
Looking o’er life’s finished story,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.

BOOM!

He has cheated
Hell and seated
Us above the fall
In desperate places
He paid our wages
One time once and for all

I always get chills when I hear this song…and am filled with immense gratitude.

Constant

I simply cannot get this song out of my head this week…which is certainly OK.

I so appreciate Hall’s story behind the song:

“I was trying to think through my life and trying to take this ambiguous picture of God and put definition to it.  And what really was standing out to me at the time was how close He was – how constant He was.  With all the fluctuation that goes on in life, He’s the most constant.”
