His Word

July 16, 2012 — Leave a comment

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.

Psalm 119:114

So appreciate that this verse doesn’t say:

“…I have put my hope in the warm, fuzzy feeling I have that is often as unpredictable as the wind.”

February 4, 2012 — 2 Comments

I’ve been reading through the Pauline Letters and was in 1 Timothy this morning.  Sometimes I like checking passages out in other versions – Da Jesus Book (the Hawai’i Pidgin Bible) is often a favorite:

We all say dis:
Da stuff bout God, dat befo time was secret, dass importan fo real kine.

Christ wen come, wit one body jalike us.
Godʼs Spirit wen show proof dat Christ stay right.
Da angel guys from God wen see him.
His guys wen teach da diffren peopos all ova da world bout him.
Get peopo inside da world dat trus him.
God wen take him back to da awesome place inside da sky.

Good words…

O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

My Ultimate Debt: Paid

February 12, 2011 — Leave a comment

We went to a Matthew Smith and Sandra McCracken concert last night and this song really hit me – especially the last two lines from the bridge:

Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,
By my love, how much I owe.

All I Owe

Words by Robert Murray McCheyne and Matthew Smith
Music by Matthew Smith

When this passing world is done,
When has sunk yon glaring sun,
When we stand with Christ in glory,
Looking o’er life’s finished story,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.

He has cheated
Hell and seated
Us above the fall
In desperate places
He paid our wages
One time once and for all

I always get chills when I hear this song…and am filled with immense gratitude.

Yet another Andrew Peterson song that sums it up for me – as his “I’ve Got News” did…

Fool With A Fancy Guitar

It’s so easy to cash in these chips on my shoulder
So easy to loose this old tongue like a tiger
It’s easy to let all this bitterness smolder
Just to hide it away like a cigarette lighter

It’s easy to curse and to hurt and to hinder
It’s easy to not have the heart to remember
That I am a priest and a prince in the Kingdom of God

I’ve got voices that scream in my head like a siren
Fears that I feel in the night when I sleep

What an amazing day yesterday – I’ll write about it at some point…I’m still processing it all.

One thing is certain:

My amazement never stops at how God constantly confirms
His love, care, direction, …

This song played several times yesterday and, this morning, I read the passage from Romans.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
1 Peter 2:24

To The Cross
Jason Ingram | Paul Baloche

Where can I go but to the cross
To the cross
For there my shame You have washed away
Where can I go but to the cross
To the cross
For there You gave up Your life for me

You stretched Your arms out wide
I lift my hands up high, to my Savior
You stretched Your arms out wide
I lift my hands up high, to my Savior

So Lord I run to the cross
To the cross
Surrender all to my Savior King
Be my ev’rything

Chains are broken
Shame has fallen
All my sins are gone
Chains are broken
Shame has fallen
All my sins are gone

“Present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness”
Romans 6:13

This week, I’m re-reading / listening to John Piper’s “Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die“.

On our response to the Good News of Christ:

“…salvation is not good news if it only saves from hell and not for God. Forgiveness is not good news if it only gives relief from guilt and doesn’t open the way to God. Justification is not good news if it only makes us legally acceptable to God but doesn’t bring fellowship with God. Redemption is not good news if it only liberates us from bondage but doesn’t bring us to God. Adoption is not good news if it only puts us in the Father’s family but not in his arms.”

– John Piper

Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous,
that he might bring us to God.

– 1 Peter 3:18

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been
brought near by the blood of Christ.

– Ephesians 2:13
