I had my first DNF today… For you non-runners, that’s Did Not Finish.
Ok, it wasn’t an official race/run, but I always finish my training runs – even if I have to walk the final section (which has become a bit common lately given my just-diagnosed ITBS.) Today though, my 2-hour, long-slow-distance run ended up being an ugly, ugly, ugly run with a walk at the tail end.
My IT band did OK until about mile 5 and then it decided that it had enough for the day. I hobbled another mile and thought about just walking the rest of the way home (just over three miles), but decided that it wasn’t the smartest thing to do. So, I called for my poop out pick-up vehicle. I walked another three quarters of a mile while Karen came to my rescue.
Thus, my first DNF.
I ended up doing 6.77@ a 13:38 pace for 1:32:22 total run time.
As I was running walking hobbling along waiting for Karen, a woman ran up next to me and offered some encouragement – seeing that I was not doing too well. It brought me back to reality from the pity party that was going on in my head…
I got home, rested, iced, and elevated my leg – and wore my compression sleeve to church. So, I guess I RIEC’d vs. RICE’d.
IT band feels pretty good this afternoon though…
Forward Ho!

Well, my doctor called today with the results from my knee MRI:
- Knee is fine structurally, though I do have some mild osteoarthritis
- Iliotibial band is not so good. I have ITB Syndrome, thus the lateral knee pain
He said it’s not enough to merit any medical procedure and recommended that I research some stretches, etc. to address it – as well as being smart about exercise. He liked the fact that I’m bicycling more and taking it easy when I run.
So, I’m researching…
Training Journal – 7/5/13:
- Current plan: Nothing fancy, just a mix of running and biking right now…with a half marathon on the calendar now!
- Today’s session: Cross Train: 90 minute bike ride
- Comments: I rode 25.47 miles @ 16 mph avg. for a time of 1:36:19.
Since today was a holiday and I was off work, I decided to try a trail run. I was a little nervous for two reasons: 1) downhills, and 2) I hadn’t done any trail runs since my 50K back in May. Nervousness aside, I went for it, planning to take it easy and just have a nice run.
I did a home-to-Alum Rock Park-to-home, out and back and it actually felt great to get “off road”, even though my knee reminded me about itself a few times. I just love the fact that I can start and finish a trail run from home!
I ended up doing 11.24 miles at an average pace of 11:14 min/mi for a total time of 2:06:15 and an elevation gain of 1,152 ft. I even made it home in enough time to run out and get hotcakes from McDonalds – booyah!!!
Anyway, have a safe and enjoyable Fourth!

My running “career” is less than two years long and I’ve had numerous highs so far; however, June 2013 was the downer month to date…
It started out with 10-days of rest imposed because of knee issues, followed by a return to running in a new and different way…that has been tough to swallow. My pre-injury average pace of 8:46 (4/12-4/13) has now been replaced by a run/walk program ratio of 3:1 that has resulted in a two-month, average pacing of 10:00. It’s frustrating, to say the least; but at least my doctor is still allowing me to run. My wife and I have had our share of “new normal” things over the past seven months, so this is just adding to the mix for me. I’m pressing on, but it still is tough.
I had one business trip this month and I actually had some nice run sessions while in Chicago – logging a total of 55.25 miles over four sessions with a bum knee!
- HIGH: Ran the San Francisco Marathon – 2nd Half…beating my goal…completing the Half It All Challenge!
- LOW: My knee issues (same as last month…)
As far as new equipment:
- I picked up a pair of Hoka One One Bondi Speeds this month. Having read that they might be easier on my knee(s), I took a chance and ordered a pair (maybe I was reaching.) I have almost 90 miles in them already and really like them. I went with my size (didn’t up-size) and like the fit, though my toes do seem to rub the end of the toe box a bit (read: black toes!) I probably should write a post about them in July…
- I started using KT Tape on my knee and it seems to help, though it definitely isn’t preventing issues. I have tried the full knee and outer knee apps and they do seem to help. I even sacrificed some leg hair! (OK, maybe this is reaching too.)
Anyway, here are the stats for the month that was June 2013:
- Current plan: Not sure right now…looking at options for a run in July
- Today’s session: 10 mile run
- Comments: I did 10.43 @ a 10:28 pace for 1:49:16 total run time. Shortened the run time toward the end to rest my knee. Had my MRI today…

- Comments: I rode 59:38 minutes for 16.13 miles @ 16 mph avg.

- Today’s session: 2-hour run
- Comments: I did 13.42 @ a 10:08 pace for 2:16:01 total run time. Knee behaved pretty good. Carried two bottles today to stay hydrated…glad I did.
