Yesterday was the 2012 Walt Disney World Half Marathon. Since I got to WDW last night for a quick 2-day conference and with this morning being my long run day, I ran my own half:

The decision to run 13 was actually made while on my run. My training plan called for 9 miles today and, at about mile 8, I thought, “why not – I’m feeling good and the meeting doesn’t start until 10a…I’ve got time!”

Thirteen miles would be my longest run ever and I had already ran (as opposed to run/walk/running) the entire eight. What to do?

“GO FOR IT! You always can stop or run/walk/run…”

…and go I did. Running the whole 13.51 at a respectable pace! The run felt great too!!! It was flat, but still – 13 miles! I actually ran under water…well I ran the underpass to the canal that goes between the Epcot resorts and Epcot itself.

Coincidentally, the 2012 WDW Marathon was today and started at the same time I started my half. I’m staying at the Yacht Club Resort and could hear the music and announcements from the Marathon’s start as I did the first few loops. I also ran near the Disney Studios marathon entrance and the mile 24 marker.

I got to see the winning pack of runners at the Marathon’s mile 24 from across the canal when I hit my mile 13 – which was kinda cool.

No shiny medal or t-shirt; but, all in all, a big morning…followed by sitting in a meeting room from 10a to 6p. WHEW!

I was jumping around some running forums the other day reading up on “Negative Split” running/training and happened upon a great “quotable” remark about running, training, and, quite honestly, life in general:

[I] Remember what a runner once told me as we were standing around for the start of a race… “No matter what you do now it won’t matter, your finish time was determined while you trained, so go have some fun.”

Well put, mississippi.delta-runner…well put.

Training Journal – 1/5/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 6 mile tempo run
  • Comments: Great run!  Good tempo and I even had negative splits for miles 2-6.27 (after I was awake started concentrating): 9:48, 9:25, 9:08, 9:07, 8:54, and 8:41.

A good read over at Seth Godin’s Blog:

“The pain of a lousy boss, of careless mistakes, of insufficient credit. The pain of instability, of bullying, of inadequate tools. The pain of poor cash flow, corrosive feedback and work that isn’t worthy of you.

Pain is part of work. And it leads to two mistakes.”

Here are the stats for the month that was December 2011:

Mileage:

  • Total: 99.99 [I now regret not running that extra block!  Sheesh Dennis!]
  • Shortest run: 3.07
  • Longest run: 10.15

Pace:

  • Overall Avg: 9:26 [-:08 from Nov!]
  • Slowest Avg: 10:43 [-:40 from Nov!]
  • Fastest Avg: 8:18 [-:26 from Nov!]

Total Running Time:

  • 15.9 hours or 956 minutes [+4.2 hrs or 251 mins from Nov!]

Training Program(s):

I had planned to start a new program called Bridge-to-10K on January 2, but decided to go ahead and form my own 10K training plan using the Runner’s World Smart Coach app.  The actual start was on 12/17.  The Bridge app seemed like a good one; but, given the fact that I had already been steadily running 5 miles straight, I couldn’t see myself going back to a program that started back with a run/walk/run regimen.  I have read lots of good reviews on the Bridge app, so I’m sure it’s great.  [I have been doing Galloway run/walk/run intervals on my long run Sundays, but those are longer than 10K…]

So, my current plan is about 20-25 miles a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.  The weekday sessions range in distance from 3 to 6 miles, with the weekend sessions being the “long run” day at 7 to 11 miles.  The plan also integrates Tempo Runs, Speed Runs, and I am adding some hill sessions as well.

All this culminates with my planned, first “official” 10K run on February 18th.

After that date, I plan to start a half marathon training program (also from the Runner’s World Smart Coach app) leading up to my planned, first “official” half marathon in July: the San Francisco Marathon – First Half.

Races Completed:

  • 12/10: Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk for Arthritis [report]

Training Journal – 12/28/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 5 mile run
  • Comments: My “Jedi Master” mentioned the term “Negative Splits” recently.  I gave it a try this morning, doing 9:07, 9:29, 9:21, 9:11, and 9:13 splits.

It’s been a great 2011 holiday break: I rested, had fun with friends and family, did a bit of work, and mainly took it easy.   Tomorrow, it’s back to work!

Among the things I did was a project that I’d been putting off for a while…a long while.

We used to have a 27″ TV in our entertainment center and replaced it a few years ago with a flat screen.

The question: What to do with the space in the entertainment center?  We tried to store videos, but it just never seemed to work in that big space – not very organized and definitely not “presentable.”

A while back, I sketched out a plan and I finally worked on it this past week.

A trip to the glass and home supply stores.

A little re-familiarization with my table saw…

…my biscuit joiner, wood glue, and clamps…

…some sanding and stain and viola! – a re-purposed section of the entertainment center!

Below are the various phases of the the project:

New Year’s Eve morning I ran Brazen Racing’s New Year’s Eve 5K run held at Lake Chabot Reservoir in Castro Valley. It was a great event – completely sold out with a total of 1072 runners by my count of the results – that had three runs: a 1/2 marathon, 10K, and 5K.  I had never been to Lake Chabot, but with a morning view like the one below and a clear and crisp morning, it was a good run day…and I will definitely run it again.

This was my second Brazen Racing event and, like the previous one, it was very organized with a great staff and volunteer team.  The expo area was nicely set up, food was great, and the SWAG was pretty good too.

If you have not run a Brazen race, I highly recommend checking them out.  I plan on running several of them in 2012.  You can check out their calendar here – they have at least one race each month in the Bay Area with most on Saturdays.

My Race

This was my fifth 5K since starting to run in September 2010.  Needless to say, I’m hooked and having a ball!

As usual, I got to the event early and kept warm in my car.  I picked up my bib and timing chip and then took a short warm-up run along the lake.  Close to the start times, I headed back to the starting line and watched the 1/2-marathon and 10K starts.

I joined my fellow 5Kers – 339 in all – in the start pen and waited for the countdown and start horn.  Before the start, they gave out an award to two 5K runners who had run in all 2011 Brazen races – dubbing them “streakers” and giving them the framed collection of 2011 race medals shown below…pretty cool!  There were “streakers” in the other two races as well…as you can see, Brazen has quite a following.

I hit my Garmin’s START button at 0907 and headed out for the out-and-back run along the lake. My goal for this race was to continue to keep my sub-30 minute time and keep my pacing on the hills (the 5K had about 4-5 short rolling hills.)  At home, as I reviewed my Garmin data, I see that I ran splits of: 8:38, 8:58, and 9:07.  They were close, though I see that I started a little fast.  Given the hills, I’m sure I was just getting tired – though I pressed and ran through the hills keeping my cadence at an average of 96 for the whole race.  I’m happy with my overall race though and see the pacing and hills as all part of the learning process of running – I seem to learn something new each time.

Results:

Garmin time: 28:37 at an 8:51/mile pace.
Official time: 28:48at an 9:17/mile pace.

Wrap-Up

Happy with my results: remained sub-30 minutes, controlled my pacing, and ran through the hills.  Brazen Races rock and will be one of my frequently attended events when planning my calendar.

Next up:

I started a 10K training plan on December 13th and my first organized 10K being Brazen Racing’s Bay Breeze on February 18th.

I don’t really have any runs planned as of this post for January, but may do the Bay Area Track Club’s Test Your Resolution Road 5k on January 15th.

Giddy-Up!

Training Journal – 1/1/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 9 mi long run. Given the fact that I ran the 5K on Saturday (which is my normal off day), I ran the balance of the 9 miles today: 10K or 6.2 miles.
  • Comments: Good run – ran the whole 10K in 59:25 at a 9:34 pace.

We may avoid announcing them in public or even outright deny making them at all, but I think most of us set some sort of goals or resolutions for ourselves each New Year. Maybe ones about fitness, work, school, family, or just life in general.

It’s good to have goals or resolutions…honest!

I read this article today and thought I’d share as my final 2011 post – where one of my resolutions was to post to my blog each day: which I accomplished. (A post about that is in the works.)

Anyway, enjoy the article – and by my calc, you have time to read, digest, and make your resolutions!

I’ve started my list and will post them next year!

Trash or Entertainment?
