Wrong Worship [ouch]

I find this funny, sad, and frustrating at the same time…and am thankful that we are not doing any of these songs tomorrow.

Comprehension

“I run in the path of Your commands,
for You have broadened my understanding.”

Psalm 119:32 (NIV)

Funny how we sometimes read the words, but comprehend them differently:

“I sit comfortably and complacently alongside the path of Your commands,
satisfied with my limited understanding of You, Your ways, and Your purpose for me.”

Psalm 119:32 (HP*)

Game of Thorns

Whenever I prune our roses, lessons abound. It’s a given.

Yesterday, I was working in the backyard on a gangly bush and saw the limb shown above. I thought, “If I grab it just right, I won’t get stuck.”

Guess what – I wasn’t ninja enough…

It hit me: temptation, or the attraction of sin can be exactly the same. We see/think/do something obviously wrong, and think, “It’s OK, I’m a ‘ninja’ – I won’t get stuck/caught/discovered/etc. No one will ever see/hear/spot me.”

The truth is, we’re wrong. We all get stuck, caught, discovered, seen, heard, spotted, etc.

We may be able to fool some in our sinful, game of thorns (like my creative reference to the book & HBO series); but rest assured, God knows – which is key since He’s the One we most offend by our blatant, would-be ninja sins.

Thank God for His amazing and wonderful forgiveness and grace!

For there is no distinction: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.

Who Made YOU King!

A while back I bought Sara Bareilles’ album Kaleidoscope Heart for my wife.  It synced to my iPhone back then and, while scrolling through my music the other day, I figured I’d give it a listen.

It’s not what I normally listen to, but the album’s got some pretty good tunes and creative lyrics.

One song that jumped out at me was King of Anything [YouTube, iTunes].  I guess we’ve all had the feelings expressed in the song in most of our relationships: “I’ve got it together”, “like you’re perfect”, “you don’t understand”, “who do you think you are”, …

When I heard the chorus, though, my parochial-school-educated and Holy-Spirit-convicted mind immediately went to what Christ-followers basically tell God when we don’t agree with Him or His Word and do what we want or think is right…you know, that thing called SIN…

“Who cares if you disagree
You are not me
Who made you king of anything
So you dare tell me who to be
Who died and made you king of anything”

ouch

As we flew home from Hawaii last Friday, I occupied my time in various ways: talking with my wife, looking at pictures, napping, playing Angry Birds, watching videos, and listening to music.

At one point, Lincoln Brewster’s song God You Reign came on…

I so appreciate that song and have listened to and lead it many, many times.  Honestly though, when I listen to it, I usually skip the ending and proceed to the next song (I guess I do this on other songs too).  This time, I let it play through as I stared out the window of the plane…

At the end of the song (at ~5:36),the words “God You Reign” are spoken three times as the song plays out.

Not to sound overly spooky or weird, but in my mind, I imagined my parents speaking those words…

…reassuring me that, no matter what…

…God reigns supreme and providentially over all.

In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

— Psalm 10:4

Ever read a verse and think, “mkay, glad that doesn’t reflect me”?

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 3

I read this passage this morning:

Blessed is the one … whose delight is in the law of the LORD and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 1:1,2 (NIV)

It’s so easy scan, skim, and think “yeah, good word” when we read God’s Word.

Meditating on It is too often overlooked…

…than again, maybe I’m alone here.

forgive me Lord

Good post from the People Of The Second Chance website…

“On Saturday night Casey Anthony walked out of an Orange County Florida jail.

She had her lawyer Jose Baez by her side plus 2 officers carrying automatic weapons and dressed for combat.

Outside was a crowd of 1,000 onlookers who hurled curses at her. Many believed this “Tot Mom” killed her child because Caylee was cramping her party-girl lifestyle.

They waved signs that said “How Could This Angel (Caylee) Been Born From This Devil?” … ”

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner confesses (AFP/Getty Images)

In his statement, Rep. Weiner said, “I have made terrible mistakes”, “I have not been honest”, and also described his actions as “dumb,” “destructive” and “deeply, deeply hurtful.”

While you or I may not have done similar actions, we probably could use some of the same words and/or phrases to describe some of our actions.

As his press conference played on the CNN feed in my office, the following words of Jesus came to mind:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.  Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?  How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Matthew 7:1-5

“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone…”

John 8:3-8

I’m moving on and worrying about my own life…
