If the title of this post were a Jeopardy question, the answer would be:

What are all things we “have” in relation to God.

Think about it…when we buy someone a gift, often it is something that is a surprise or unexpected (unless someone spills the beans).  When we give God our worship (which is all that we are and do: Romans 12:1 & Colossians 3:17), we are giving Him something that He created.  We offer back to the One who created that which He created.  There is nothing that we can give, write, sing, play, do, say, act,…whatever that doesn’t originate from Him.  We never surprise Him with our worship.

It’s mind boggling when you think about it.

Romans 11:36 reads:
“For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen”

“All Things” pretty much covers everything…anything that we can offer.

easy btnI have one of these on my desk.  I’ve had it for a while, although it did get pushed to the back by magazines and papers (I have some piles…don’t judge me).  As I was cleaning the desk the other day, I saw it and got to thinking about how, if we are honest with ourselves (and God), we would much rather have something like this in life than depend completely upon God or even come before Him in prayer.

We are in good company.  In Mark 9:14-29, we see that Jesus’ disciples (the ones He picked to follow Him first), still occasionally defaulted to primarily relying on their own ability (sound familiar?).  In this passage, we read that they couldn’t cast out a demon from a possessed child…and the crowds and the boy’s father are not happy.  The bible doesn’t describe that scene, but can you imagine the disciple’s frustration and repeated attempts?  Not to be sacrilegious, but the image of trying to start a lawnmower repeatedly comes to mind…

So I posted my weekly Service Set list, Recap, and Confessional last night – including a whine (or waa!) in the confessional portion.  It felt good to write about it and get it off my chest.  Sunday AM was rough – I felt rushed and didn’t like not have things under control…

THE SKADOOSH*:

Fast forward to this morning.  I’ve been listening to Andy Stanley’s podcast series, Defining Moments and this morning I was on episode 8, Playing God.  The text was from John 18:28 to 19:16…it’s about Jesus before Pilate.  The key being that while Pilate thought he was in control – he wasn’t.

Get your HABIT on!

May 29, 2009 — 1 Comment

nuns...We all worship something (sports, music, the list goes on…) – but GOD commands, desires, deserves our genuine worship!  Our worship of GOD is soooo much more than Sunday mornings! It must be our entire life – a 24/7-kinda thing.

Our worship of GOD must become a HABIT. We’re all basically selfish (worshiping the things that please us or are interesting to us) and it’s probably not our default to worship GOD.  Keying off the word HABIT, the old English (and French, thanks to my friend Christian) definition of HABIT is “clothing, a condition, or character of something.”

Keeping in mind the definition above, a nuns garb is called a HABIT.  Their HABIT is a reminder to them and a sign to others of the cloistered life they have chosen.

As followers of Christ, we have a HABIT – JESUS CHRIST:

I was behind this really, really nice truck today in the drive-thru and snapped this picture.

The back window got me thinking that being excessive can be good.  Good when in response to our amazing God who loves us with an excessive love.

Made me think of Romans 11:35-12:1…

crossGood Friday was six weeks ago today – I pray that each day (not just a single Friday each year) would be a profound reminder of what Christ accomplished on that Wonderful Cross (and the following SUNDAY)…a blessed Déjà vu!

I took this picture a few months ago as I was running some errands – I was at a stoplight and it just caught my eye. Now, every time I pass it, one of my favorite Vicky Beeching songs – The Wonder of the Cross – comes to mind.

Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all!

Ascention Day!

So on the Christian liturgical calendar, today (Thursday, 5/21) commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven.

From Acts chapter one:

7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Christ is risen!  Has ascended!  Christ will come again!

I started listing to Andy Stanley’s podcast series, “Defining Moments” the other day – very good series!  One verse that has been resounding in my head since starting has been John 8:31-32:

31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The main reason for this rocking around in my head is because I’ve been teaching through Crazy Love this past quarter at church.  There is a ton of stuff in there (and the accompanying scripture) that is life changing and challenging – it hit me when I first read the book, now in teaching through it, its pounding me!

Not feeling too well today…I’m in Florida for a work conference and the allergies are kickin’ my be-hind!  Whine completed…now on the with post.

I was prepping for Sunday School this evening (Francis Chan’s Crazy Love), and two things hit me smack dab between the eyes:

I listen to a variety of music & artists, but am kind of hooked on Phil Joel right now – especially his “The delibertatePeople. Album” (his other stuff is good also).  It’s the lyrics.  They draw me in – challenging and encouraging me each time I listen!  Check out his site…his story is pretty cool.

Every time I hear the song Awe – it reminds me of what my posture should be when I pray, read, think about/to GOD – flat…out…AWE. To be completely honest, it isn’t always that way (forgive me Lord).  I think sometimes it is easy to get too comfortable with Him being my friend or my “Abba, Father” that I forget He is at the same time Holy, Sovereign, and unlike any other person with whom I have a relationship. It is the challenge of balancing intimacy with reverence – something that, in most of our lives, is unique to God.  We can respect, even fear people; but, when you boil it down, no man or woman is holy, sovereign, or worthy of awe when compared with God.
