Get your HABIT on!

nuns...We all worship something (sports, music, the list goes on…) – but GOD commands, desires, deserves our genuine worship!  Our worship of GOD is soooo much more than Sunday mornings! It must be our entire life – a 24/7-kinda thing.

Our worship of GOD must become a HABIT. We’re all basically selfish (worshiping the things that please us or are interesting to us) and it’s probably not our default to worship GOD.  Keying off the word HABIT, the old English (and French, thanks to my friend Christian) definition of HABIT is “clothing, a condition, or character of something.”

Keeping in mind the definition above, a nuns garb is called a HABIT.  Their HABIT is a reminder to them and a sign to others of the cloistered life they have chosen.

As followers of Christ, we have a HABIT – JESUS CHRIST:

I was behind this really, really nice truck today in the drive-thru and snapped this picture.

The back window got me thinking that being excessive can be good.  Good when in response to our amazing God who loves us with an excessive love.

Made me think of Romans 11:35-12:1…

So my life is far from hard.  The “trials” I have gone through (I really don’t even feel right calling them that) are not comparable to those that many have had and I humbly praise God for that (if that is even a right thing to do).

I guess the toughest thing that I (and Karen) have gone through has been our two plus-year adoption journey.  A plus-year year combination of international then domestic, on then off, known then unknown status, and now back on track.  A series of ups and down – all the while knowing that our amazing Heavenly Father was in control…even when we didn’t know where He was leading next!  BTW, Karen is great.  At one point, she described a disappointing situation this way, “First I was sad.  Then I was mad.  Then I was glad!”

As you can imagine – plus-year years of a mix of emotions.  At times, we’ve wondered “why God?”  At times, we’ve asked “why not God?”  We’ve even (in all honesty) said, “come on God!”  We’ve cried, been confused, been excited, been hurt, been mad, been hopeful, been discouraged.  The cool part is that through it all…THROUGH IT ALL, we’ve known that God was in control and had a plan…we’ve just gotten to see it revealed in segments and in His perfect timing!

Tuesday, I was listening to a Andy Stanley’s Defining Moments podcast (#4) and John 9:1-3 hit me.  I’ve read this so many times, heard sermons, read commentaries…  This time, it just hit me anew.  It reads:

1As he [Jesus] went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  3“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

The 50 Pics day begins!

The 50 Pics day begins!

Among the Tweeps I interact with on Twitter, Friday (May 22) was proclaimed 50 Picture day by Russ Hutto.

The images below were taken throughout my day – at home, work, wherever.  In most cases, the caption below the image tells the story.  In some cases, more info is provided by clicking on the photo (as annotated).  I had fun taking them – hope they give you some semblance of what my May 22, 2009 was like.

(BTW, If you click on a photo, you’ll have to hit the back button to return to the main page…for some reason, there is no “return” link.)

crossGood Friday was six weeks ago today – I pray that each day (not just a single Friday each year) would be a profound reminder of what Christ accomplished on that Wonderful Cross (and the following SUNDAY)…a blessed Déjà vu!

I took this picture a few months ago as I was running some errands – I was at a stoplight and it just caught my eye. Now, every time I pass it, one of my favorite Vicky Beeching songs – The Wonder of the Cross – comes to mind.

Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all!

Ascention Day!

So on the Christian liturgical calendar, today (Thursday, 5/21) commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven.

From Acts chapter one:

7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Christ is risen!  Has ascended!  Christ will come again!

I started listing to Andy Stanley’s podcast series, “Defining Moments” the other day – very good series!  One verse that has been resounding in my head since starting has been John 8:31-32:

31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The main reason for this rocking around in my head is because I’ve been teaching through Crazy Love this past quarter at church.  There is a ton of stuff in there (and the accompanying scripture) that is life changing and challenging – it hit me when I first read the book, now in teaching through it, its pounding me!

anniecropI was on a business trip last week and, in addition to the souvenirs I got for Karen (I never come home empty-handed), I came home with severe allergies.  I stayed home from work Monday and, as I sat in my chair, clogged up, napping, and watching TV, our dog Annie caught my eye – totally resting, relaxed, content, looking at me. She always sits so that she can tell if Karen or I move, because that may mean one of two things: play time or a COOKIE! As I looked back at her, it dawned on me – she is always happy, tail wagging, ready to please.  She can be totally out of breath from play, she can be hobbling with a hurt leg, she can be just about to eat her supper, …she can be just about anything: but she is always happy, tail wagging, ready to please.

It got me thinking about one of the Profiles of the Obsessed in Francis Chan’s Crazy Love Chapter 8, which was this past week’s Sunday school lesson:

Going Home!

So I have been on travel all week in Key Largo, Florida for a work conference.  Location is nice, but I haven’t really enjoyed it all that much – I have had TERRIBLE allergies and have pretty much been completely clogged up for the past two days. I know, I can hear the violins playing all over!

OK, I did venture out today after the meeting and took the 2.5-hour drive to Key West, ate a late lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, and walked around.  Shot the requisite pictures of the Southernmost Point marker and the Interstate 1 “Mile 0” sign.  Then made the long drive home.  Dinner was the finer cuisine of Waffle House, as there really wasn’t anything closer to the resort and I didn’t want to pay $40 for a hamburger!
