My Valentine

February 14, 2012 — Leave a comment

Nigh a score and seven years ago thou captivated my heart

And lo, I’ve been thine e’er since

Many roads we’ve traveled- most joyous, some with tribulation:

Always hand in hand,
Sometimes thou leaning,
Sometimes me,
Sometimes both.

Though at the time, “remove the trial” I wished, I prayed
In hindsight, our love was strengthened e’en more
Our bond, made tighter
Our Reliance, e’en firmer

See, my love, many are the things I cherish about thee:

Thy smile encourages and slays me still
The sound of thy laughter tames and tickles
Thy care and concern doth comfort my soul
The genuineness of thy character doth inspire me
Thy true love and friendship – ah, priceless treasures they are!
– – –
Alas, an endless list I easily could pen…
…and a lifetime foreseen to fathom, to appreciate them all!

Nigh a score and seven years ago thou captivated my heart

And lo, I’ve been thine e’er since,
And wilt e’ermore!

Training Journal – 2/14/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 3 mile easy run
  • Comments: Nice morning for a run. I lost my pinky toenail last night – a casualty of a twisted, poser sport sock worn on a 13.1 a few weeks ago.   I wondered if it would bug me this morning – no issues (thank goodness!)

An Author and A Memory

February 13, 2012 — Leave a comment

It’s funny the memories a word or phrase can conjure up.

We were in a used bookstore yesterday and this book, or more specifically, this author’s name caught my eye.

Not because of my enjoyment of this book.

Not because I recall enjoying any other books by Alcott.

Not even because of any wonderful memories I have from American Literature classes.

Simply because of the memories I have of Continue Reading…

So sad.

Today is a rest day, but I’ll wear on tomorrow’s long run:

Sized

With ~110 lbs less of me around, I finally broke down and had my ring sized…

…no turning back now, baby!

Training Journal – 2/10/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 3 mile easy run @ 11:14
  • Comments: Again, in the vein of sticking to what is on the “plan,” I only ran 3.2 this morning…@ 10:51 [doh!]. After yesterday’s speedwork, an easy 3 mile was probably wise. I guess those plans are thoughtfully developed!

Training Journal – 2/9/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 6 mile Speedwork run: Warm-up –> 5×800 in 4:19 w/400 jogs –> cooldown.
  • Comments: In the vein of not cutting corners and sticking to what is on the “plan”, I went for it this morning and did the scheduled speedrun (though I was tempted to simply run a 10K.) I purposely ignored my watch – listening for the interval beeps. Not bad:

    • 800 #1: 3:42
    • 800 #2: 3:32
    • 800 #3: 3:39
    • 800 #4: 3:33
    • 800 #5: 3:47

OK, I’ll admit: it felt good too! Though I think in the future I will “watch the watch” – there is no way I could keep up with those times past a 1/2 mile…4:19 might be a little more doable for longer distances.

My Slowest 4 Miles [so far]

January 31, 2012 — 1 Comment

In my continuing read of Hal Higdon’s, Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide, I’ve noted several areas in my training regimen that I need to change…

Today’s focus was: Training Pace

So, this morning I forced myself to run as close to the listed “easy run” pace for today’s session: 11:21

MANTRA: There is a reason for the various components of the training plan and the pacing as well – running at race pace or faster all the time won’t result in a good half or full marathon run. (as you can see, I’m thinking ahead…)

It was tough and I still ended up with an overall 10:49 pace – which is still a full minute slower than my average pace for a run of the same distance.  The splits for this morning’s 4-mile run were: 10:12, 11:11, 10:51, and 11:05 – at least I came close to 11 twice.

I felt like I was dragging, but kept telling myself that over a 13.1 or 26.2 mile run, learning this technique will result in negative splits and ultimately better times…

Who said running was simple, thoughtless, forward movement!

One side note: I finally broke down and bought some decent “running” socks – my poser sport socks just were not cutting it anymore.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!  [happy feet!  happy feet!]

Now to focus on the other laundry list of items from the book…

Training Journal – 1/31/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 3 mile easy run
  • Comments: See above.  [i ran 4.46 vs. 3 – the balance of which probably qualifies as “junk miles” in the Higdon book!]

Yep Yep
