In The Bleak Midwinter

December 24, 2011 — Leave a comment

My friend Dave shared this video the other day…simply wonderful. [thanks Dave!]

[YouTube]

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen snow on snow snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter long ago

Our God heav’n cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain
Heav’n and earth shall flee away, when He comes to reign
In the bleak midwinter, a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ

Angels and archangels, may have gathered there
Cherubim and seraphim, thronged the air
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved, with a kiss

What can I give Him, poor as I am
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wise man, I would do my part
Yet what can I give Him, give my heart

Training Journal – 12/24/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest
  • Comments: After running by and smelling breakfast at McD’s several times this week I got my fix!

I read this the other day and it hit me that we often see it incorrectly…

We read:

“…giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

Colossians 1:12 NIV

We often think:

“…giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has seen all the good things we do, understands the shortfalls we have, and recognizes that we are entitled and deserve to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

…forgive us me, oh God.

Training Journal – 12/23/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Easy 5 mile run
  • Comments: Good run!  A brisk 34 degrees out, which gave me a chance to try my new beanie.  I was toasty: cold, shmold!

Behold the Lamb of God: The True Tall Tale of the Coming of Christ is hands-down, my favorite Christmas album.  Period.

Mainly because of its “whole story” aspect of the telling of the Christmas story.  I wrote a post about the album back in 2009, which has been my “most clicked” post for the last 90 days.  I actually arranged the album for our church choir and wrote an accompanying drama back in 2009 as well, but had to cancel the program for various reasons…maybe someday.

If you are looking for a good and thought-provoking Christmas album, head over to iTunes and get a copy!

Speedwork Session #1

December 22, 2011 — Leave a comment

So, when I first set-up the 10K Training plan I’m doing using the Runner’s World Smart Coach app, I will admit…December 22 seemed ominous:

The mere use of the word “speed” with running, let alone associated with 800 meters (a half mile for you non-metric system folks), made me nervous.  I’ve run 5 miles many times – longer distances as well – but not at a defined “speed” pace.

The day arrived and, given yesterday’s post about “embracing discomfort“, I sucked it up and went for it!

The session actually went quite well – especially given the fact that most of the “speed” session was into the 5+ mph wind that was blowing this morning.

My times were actually better than the plan (4:24).  I was winded after each 800, but forced myself to slowdown and recover during the 400 jog – knowing that I’d pay a price during the next 800 interval if I didn’t.

[Info about splits 8 & 9 below]

Overall, it was a great morning run and I can now face the next speedwork sessions with confidence.  Doing these sessions and the tempo sessions will definitely break up the weekday runs.

Splits 8 & 9: When I finished my run, my Garmin said I only ran 4.33 miles – I knew I ran my 5 mile route!  Reviewing the run at lunch, I discovered the issue: operator error.  Apparently, after the intervals stopped, I forgot to press the correct button to transition to the cool-down portion/workout.  I do remember getting a “power save” warning that prompted me to press the Lap button…

The resulting route below made me smile: No, I did not integrate a parkour routine into this morning’s session.  Parkour for me would probably end up much the same as it did for Andy Bernard.

Training Journal – 12/22/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Speedwork: ~1.5 mi Warm-up; 3×800 in 4:24w/400 jogs; ~1.25 mi Cool-down
  • Comments: See above.

Good read over at Michael Hyatt’s blog…check it out.

I think there are three reasons why you and I should embrace discomfort, whether we deliberately choose it, or it simply happens to us.

I pass one of these each day on the way home from work…pretty cool.

Training Journal – 12/20/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 5 mi Run
  • Comments: Nice run. Good pacing as well. I think I’m getting this thing…

I have to admit:

I find this both intriguing, scary…

…yet still intriguing.

Training Journal – 12/19/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest day!
  • Comments: I’m sure even Spartans rested…

I’ve been reading in the book of Acts this week…

Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the [Gentile] believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.”

– – –

[In Jerusalem, Peter said] “No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

– Acts 15:1, 11 NIV

I think sometimes today’s Christians say or think much the same as the Christians from Judea:

“Unless you _____________, you cannot be saved.”

We forget that it is by grace that we are saved, through faith—not by works or any preexisting or “changed” condition (Eph. 2:8-9).  We impose “fill-in-the-blank” requirements for salvation, forgetting that Christ died for sinners – not the “saintly” (Rom. 5:8.)

Of course, once we have relationship with Jesus, then we must address the sin in our lives…continually (Romans, Galatians, I John, etc.)

So thankful God doesn’t require that
the way of Salvation be flipped…

…none would be saved, especially me.

Training Journal – 12/18/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training (week 1 in the bag!  Mileage: 21.42)
  • Today’s session: Long Run – 8 mi
  • Comments: Nice run.  Clear and crisp morning…peaceful outside.  Pacing plan was 11:28…I simply find it hard to run that slow.  Pacing was an average 9:56 using a 4:00/:30 run/walk, Galloway ratio.  I tried GU Chomps this morning and they were actually pretty good.

He Putteth Up

December 16, 2011 — Leave a comment

I read this the other day:

He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

– Acts 13:18 NLT

So glad He puts up with me too.  [thank You God!]

x

…Oh, and here’s a little hymn I wrote:

He putteth up with me
He putteth up with me
Just as He didst with Israel…and every other person He created
He putteth up with me

[cha, cha, cha!]

Training Journal – 12/16/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Easy 4 mi run
  • Comments: Good run on another brisk morning.  After starting out a little fast, I remembered the “easy” part of the training day plan and slowed down…
