Smorgie Lunch:

  • Pork fried rice
  • Strawberry-Banana Yogurt
  • Dark Chocolate & Nut Trail Mix bar
  • Green apple

It just sounded good & I think the food groups were covered…

Patience test:

Restrung the broken drawstring on my running pants. Went OK (whew)!

Training Journal – 2/25/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest day.
  • Comments: Slept in and had our traditional, Saturday morning breakfast: McDonald’s pancakes & sausage platter. Funny, I shared with a friend this past week that this is a 12+ year tradition at our house.  Yummy!

A Modeled Conversation

February 24, 2012 — Leave a comment

On my run this morning, I could hear two dogs barking back and forth.

It got me thinking about what a conversation with my neighbor would look like if we interacted similarly…

me: BOB!
[silence]
me:
BOB!
[silence]
me: BOB?
[silence]
me: BOB!

bob: DENNIS?
me: BOB?
bob: DENNIS!
me: BOB!

bob: HOW’S THINGS?
me: BOB?
bob: DENNIS!
me: HOW’S THINGS?
bob: GREAT!  HOW ARE YOU?
me: JUST FINE!

[silence]

me: BOB?
bob: DENNIS?
me: BOB?
bob: DENNIS!
me: BOB!

[silence]

bob: DENNIS?
[silence]
me: BOB?
[silence]

john: WOULD YOU GUYS KEEP IT DOWN!

[silence]
me: BOB?
[silence]

i know, i need to think “higher thoughts” during my runs.

Training Journal – 2/24/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: 6 mile easy run @ 11:18.
  • Comments: Nice morning! Clear, slightly warmer than it has been, and a good head and tailwind (depending on where I was on my route.)  11:18 pace…pffft…try 9:31.  I still am challenged on follow planned pace on non-long run days…

Ah, The Joys of Running

February 23, 2012 — Leave a comment

OK, this isn’t the main one, but it is one that I am liking…

Behold, the Hershey’s Chocolate Bar Cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory.

Surprised my wife this evening…we’re sharing, of course!

Training Journal – 2/23/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: 7 mile tempo run @ 9:41.
  • Comments: This morning I added a pair of 300M, 8.7%-grade hill intervals to the tempo run – variety…spice…life and all. They went pretty good and my overall tempo/pace for the 7 miles was 9:29 – even with the hills. I figure I need to start adding hills to my training in prep for some upcoming runs.  The plan is to add them at least once a week.

A Vader Vision

The other day I was playing with the pup in our backyard, turned around, and saw this shadow on the shed…

[sound of filtered breathing]

Training Journal – 2/22/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest day.
  • Comments: I was going to go ahead and run even though it was a scheduled rest day…the alarm went off, but the warm bed won. I guess abiding by the plan is good!

Phat Tuesday

I marked Fat Tuesday by purchasing some jeans…

…in a size that I’ve not seen in forever.

Training Journal – 2/21/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: 4 mile easy run @ 11:18.
  • Comments: Nice easy one…like it should have been. Still a bit fast on pace…oh well.

A Status Re-Posted

February 20, 2012 — Leave a comment

This is a portion of what a friend posted to her FB wall yesterday morning at about 7:30:

“…everyone could use a prayer or two. …share this status to give a prayer of support to all those who have family problems, struggles, worries, and just need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us for no one is immune.”

This morning I heard that her husband suddenly passed away yesterday afternoon.

Hurting and praying for her and her family.

I normally don’t re-post things.  This one’s up on my wall now…

Training Journal – 2/20/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest
  • Comments: Slept in, had our normal Saturday McD’s breakfast (skipped since I had a run), worked in the yard, and basically will chill this evening – oh, and work on taxes…

Training Journal – 2/19/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest
  • Comments: Supposed to be the post-race rest day, but I went ahead and ran the balance of my usual Sunday long-run session – 5.22 on the log.

Good one…

BTW, there is some science behind the n-second rule…n being 60 versus 5!

Indicators

February 16, 2012 — Leave a comment

This morning, there was a nice 5-7 mph breeze that accompanied the ~44 degree temp on my run. No complaints, just an observation…

Anyway, as I was running, it dawned on me: without looking at my watch, I had some natural “level of effort” indicators moving around me: leaves

  • Leaves blowing with me = easier or lower level of effort
  • Leaves blowing at me = increased or higher level of effort

It got me thinking: too often we are oblivious to – or outright ignore – the “indicators” life presents us.

Indicators that tell us:

  • Press on
  • Slow down
  • Stop.  Just stop
  • Use caution
  • Stop talking and just listen
  • Say something
  • Change directions
  • Pick up the pace
  • Don’t do that again
  • …and many, many more

NOTE TO SELF:
Don’t become too oblivious to – or outright ignore – life’s indicators!
[Also, blowing leaves can be a great illustrative reminder.  That said, thoughtfully plan to keep the leaves blowing “with you” during the second half of a longer run.]

Training Journal – 2/16/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 5 mile tempo run @9:50
  • Comments: Good run. Another clear and brisk morning. Tempo was off plan, but it felt right: 9:10

Extremed!
