Big Island Vacation

January 27, 2012 — Leave a comment

What a wonderful week on the Big Island. So many memories:

  • Lazy days by the ocean, pool, and lagoon
  • Mai Tais
  • A trip to Akaka Falls
  • A trip to the Kīlauea Volcano with day and night views of Halema’uma’u Crater
  • Shopping in Kona, Hawi, Waikoloa, and many more locations.
  • A trip to the northern region of the Island, taking in the tropical side of the Island
  • 37.26 miles on the run log, the longest being a nice 13.1 run around Waikoloa Resort
  • Read through and chewed on four of the Pauline Letters (“Go Eat PopCorn!”)
  • Started reading and digesting Hal Higdon’s, Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide
  • Several great meals – notables being: Ken’s House of Pancakes, Hawaiian Style Cafe, Kirin Restaurant at our resort, and Eddie Aikau Restaurant and Surf Museum
  • Tried paddle boarding – and didn’t fall in or make a fool of myself in front of e beach full of people!
  • Enjoyed a great luau with my wahine!
  • Watched the whales – even saw a couple jump out of the water.
  • And probably a bunch of other stuff that just doesn’t come to mind as we’re flying back home…

But most of all, I enjoyed spending time with my wonderful wife and starting our 26th year of marriage.

So it’s back to work on Monday – gotta start replenishing the bank for the next vacation!

Halema’uma’u Crater just before and after sunset – January 22, 2012.

Apparently there was a 4.7 earthquake today – we didn’t feel it though…

Part of the continuing “stray hair” report feature:

Must have been a long-haired maintenance dude (or dudette.)

Today’s mystery:

Just how did this hair get in the space between the inside and outside airplane window panels?

GuBrewYoGlop

January 18, 2012 — Leave a comment

I was looking at my food log yesterday and noticed that during the week, I pretty much eat & drink the same things pre- and post-run.

I give you, GuBrewYoGlop*:

…the later two are always chased with a grande Americano, of course!

*Glop being the name my wife has given to my oatmeal/cranberry/Kashi concoction

Training Journal – 1/18/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 4 mile easy run
  • Comments: Today was just what it was supposed to be – a 4 mile easy run…

These either hit my Inbox, were read, or were seen while fortuitously hopping around the Internet this past week:

For He chose us in him before the creation of the world…

– Paul, Ephesians 1:4

Fall seven times, stand up eight.

– Japanese Proverb

To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.

– William Shakespeare, Henry VIII

Running is just you, the work you put in, and the clock. You can’t cheat yourself. If you don’t put in the miles, you can’t go to the starting line thinking you’re going to pull a miracle out of nowhere. You get out exactly as much as you put in.

– Desiree Davila

If we write our dreams and goals down, we dramatically increase our odds of realization. If we share them with others, they become potent and alive.

– Kristin Armstrong

“We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves.”

– Sir Roger Bannister

…all worth of being chewed upon and actions being taken.

thus:

  1. Remember that God loves and chose – even before I messed things up (which He knew would happen anyway)
  2. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or take risks, resolve to learn from them…and strive to not repeat the same mistake too many times!
  3. Train, train, train.  Then: Improve, improve, improve.  [don’t be satisfied with the “train” level]
  4. With running, nay with anything in life, don’t settle for GIGO.
  5. Make a list. Share it.
  6. Don’t forget the fun part of running…and life!

  • Comments: Still a bit under the weather…so I followed my wife’s counsel and rested today.

Me, In The Future!

Apparently, in the future, I haven’t aged, am svelte, eat right, still run, and take up hand gliding.  Cool!

Training Journal – 1/10/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 4 mile run
  • Comments: Nice run.  Ran from the WDW Yacht Hotel to the Disney’s Hollywood Studios entrance, then around the EPCOT Resorts lake a few times.  At ~51 degrees, it’s been nice to wear shorts while running…

Fun, But…

…not as fun as when I’m with my wonderful wife.

I ready to go home…

Training Journal – 1/9/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: Rest
  • Comments: It was nice to rest my legs from yesterday by siting in a meeting all day… A little ice tonight as well (after an evening in EPCOT.)

A good read over at Seth Godin’s Blog:

“The pain of a lousy boss, of careless mistakes, of insufficient credit. The pain of instability, of bullying, of inadequate tools. The pain of poor cash flow, corrosive feedback and work that isn’t worthy of you.

Pain is part of work. And it leads to two mistakes.”
