Two weeks from today, I will run my third marathon.

That weekend will also be the first anniversary of my first marathon.

It was a great day and I learned a ton: especially that Salt Stick caps rock.

One cool thing is that I drive by the 5.7 to 6.5 and 18.8 to 19.6 sections of that two-loop, marathon course each day when I drive to work.  The first section was at a comfortable 8:34 pace…the second was a grueling, cramps-in-both-calves, when-will-this-end, what-did-I-get-myself-into, 13:00+ pace.  I eventually recovered – due to said Salt Stick caps – and finished with a respectable 4:05:05 time.  Every morning, driving by that section of 101 is a reminder of my first 26.2, my love of running, and to never “long run” without Salt Stick caps.

I saw this tweet this morning – WOW:

On this morning’s run, I wore a beta version of the new Forward Looking Turkey Radar goggles they’re developing at work.

Impressive.

Training Journal – 11/29/13:

  • Current plan: ZRQL Marathon Training Plan – Taper Week 1 of 3
  • Today’s session: 8/5 RuBi
  • Comments: Since this week’s training was shifted by a day and with my faster-than-normal pacing on yesterday’s Turkey Trot, I decided to do a recovery run instead of a run/bike. I did an out and back from my house up into Alum Rock Park. It was a peaceful run. I did 9.6 miles @ a 9:14 avg pace, avg cadence 87 & a run time of 1:28:31. [Strava]

So, So Thankful

I guess there are many things about which I’m thankful; but, without a doubt, what I’m most thankful for is my wonderful wife.

She is kind, genuine, understanding, thoughtful, caring, loving, and so many other things. Most of all, she’s tolerant of me; which, believe me, that involves quite a bit.

20131128-183258.jpgA while back, I saw an interview with triathlete Meredith Kessler who said that she always writes her husband’s initial on her thumb during races. I’ve been doing it ever since…and did this morning for the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot.

So, so thankful for her.

  • Comments: I’ll post a race report later this week; but I PR’d this morning by 1:16, ending up with a 46:39 @ a 7:31 pace and cadence of 98. [Strava]

Why 20? 20 “Y”!

Ran my Big Sur, Hurricane Point simulator route this morning…AKA the “Y” route.

My goal was to keep the overall pacing at around 9-minute miles – I did pretty good.  I ran it easy and without walking until mile 12, where I took a .2 mile walk break and took a GU ahead of the summit turn around.  Overall, a great morning run!

Forward. On.

Heard an interesting distinction today: moving forward vs. moving on.

The former means not forgetting, but progressing; while the later implies forgetting and leaving behind.

In some cases, one is better, wiser, or more necessary then the other.

Both are tough though…and neither make life any easier.
