Sage Advice

February 29, 2012 — Leave a comment

This was on the wall at the restaurant tonight:

Training Journal – 2/29/12:

  • Current plan: 12K Training
  • Today’s session: 4 Mile Easy Run
  • Comments: Same as yesterday: Did a 6.2 instead – though a tempo run vs. a negative split test.  On the outbound leg of the out-and-back, I ran up on a skunk – which resulted in a 100 yard dash being incorporated into the tempo run!

An Author and A Memory

February 13, 2012 — Leave a comment

It’s funny the memories a word or phrase can conjure up.

We were in a used bookstore yesterday and this book, or more specifically, this author’s name caught my eye.

Not because of my enjoyment of this book.

Not because I recall enjoying any other books by Alcott.

Not even because of any wonderful memories I have from American Literature classes.

Simply because of the memories I have of Continue Reading…

So sad.

Today is a rest day, but I’ll wear on tomorrow’s long run:

Christmas Keepsakes

Christmas brings out many keepsakes…

I was cleaning up the wrapping paper, bows, and boxes today and was reminded to make sure I saved this box – that’s my mom’s writing.

A Cave And A Memory

December 15, 2011 — Leave a comment

The Cave

When I started running, Karen asked if I was going to get “one of those headlight things.”  My response, “Pffft, yeah right!”

I caved, got one, and really like it.

The Memory

See’s peanut brittle was one of my dad’s favorite Christmas time treats – a close second was old fashioned hard candy (that pretty much ending up sticking together in a single mass as the season progressed.)

I bought us a box the other day, kind of in remembrance.  Some of us used to get in trouble for eating most of “his” box. 🙂

Training Journal – 12/15/11:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 5 mi Tempo Run
  • Comments: Good run.  Stayed pretty much on tempo with the planned pace (±30 sec, though pacing was upside down from where it should be.)  There was a light drizzle so I gave my light wind/rain jacket a test.

Happy Birthday, Mom

Happy birthday, mom…miss hearing your voice and felling your hug.

Clarity, Delayed

September 4, 2011 — Leave a comment

A year ago, my dad and his wife died in a car accident. Then and now: it hurts.

A person I’d loved my entire lifetime and another I’d only known less than a year were tragically gone…

I’ve been and still am: angry, confused, bitter, regretful, sorrowful, apathetic, depressed, broken, … many things.

I’ve grappled with the knowledge that others have lost loved ones as well, often thinking to myself, “who am I to think that I am any different.”

I’ve asked “why?” too many times to count, knowing that I’ll never know the answer to that question this side of heaven – for we read:

“Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.”

I Corinthians 13:12 (NLT)

I believe clarity will come…

…and yet, at the very moment it does, it probably won’t matter.

For, as the song Soon expresses:

I will be with One I love.
With unveiled face I’ll see Him.
There my soul will be satisfied.

Soon and very soon

The Power of a Hug

August 2, 2011 — Leave a comment

Contemplative post, but I found myself imagining what it felt like to hug my mom and dad this morning.

“Hug” is an understatement…we squeezed.

Never underestimate the power of a hug…

…or memories.

“…can we all get along?”

— Rodney King, 1992

sometimes this quote just pops into my mind…
