Interactions

Read this today.  Pretty clear guidance on interactions … though often a challenge:

Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.

– 1 Timothy 5:1, 2 (NLT)

Chomp! CHOMP!

Training Journal – 2/5/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 11 Mile Long Run @ 11:21
  • Comments: What a wonderful morning for a run along the rolling East foothills.  The pacing challenge continues: I TRIED, but still can’t seem to hit the goal.  Today’s average was 9:58.  Splits were pyramid rather than positive or negative in shape…  giddy-up!

Numba 1 Fo Timoty 3:16

I’ve been reading through the Pauline Letters and was in 1 Timothy this morning.  Sometimes I like checking passages out in other versions – Da Jesus Book (the Hawai’i Pidgin Bible) is often a favorite:

We all say dis:
Da stuff bout God, dat befo time was secret, dass importan fo real kine.

Christ wen come, wit one body jalike us.
Godʼs Spirit wen show proof dat Christ stay right.
Da angel guys from God wen see him.
His guys wen teach da diffren peopos all ova da world bout him.
Get peopo inside da world dat trus him.
God wen take him back to da awesome place inside da sky.

Tired

February 3, 2012 — Leave a comment

Call it the “post-vacation blues”, exhaustion, or whatever, I simply seem to be more tired from one week back in the office than six days of activity in Hawaii.

A return to the Islands might
be a prescribed remedy…

…and possibly a weekend!

Training Journal – 2/3/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 6 Mile Easy Run @ 9:55
  • Comments: Another day with the “pace abiding” goal: planned was 9:55, achieved was 9:16 (Oh well.)  I did have negative splits and a sub-60 minute 10K!  [I also discovered myself humming “smooth” at least five times during the run!]

Marathon Thoughts [video]

February 2, 2012 — 1 Comment

I’ve yet to run one (late 2012/first half 2013 is the goal),
but this video may provide some preparatory insight…

..anyone care to  confirm?

In my two 13-mile training runs, miles 1, 2, & 10 seem familiar; miles 7 & 11, not at all…

Training Journal – 2/2/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 7 Mile Tempo Run @9:55
  • Comments: Good run.  In my effort to abide by “the plan”, I tried to stick with the 9:55 pace.  Discounting mile one (which  always seems to be fast), I was closer to 9:40.  At any rate, a good session.

Here are the stats for the month that was January 2012:

Mileage:

  • Total: 123.85 [boosted by my 37.26-mile week on my recent vacation!]
  • Shortest run: 3.13 [Test Your Resolution Road 5k]
  • Longest run: 13.51 [on my vacation – I guess I was motivated!]

Pace:

  • Overall Avg: 9:15 [-:11 from Dec!]
  • Slowest Avg: 10:49 [+:06 from Dec, which was a good thing]
  • Fastest Avg: 8:16 [-:02 from Dec!  This was from the 5K I ran]

Total Running Time:

  • 19.3 hours or 1157 minutes [+4.2 hrs or 251 mins from Dec!]

Training Program(s):

Current plan is a 10K training plan I made using the Runner’s World Smart Coach app.  It is about 20-25 miles a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. The weekday sessions range in distance from 3 to 6 miles, with the weekend sessions being the “long run” day at 7 to 11 miles. The plan integrates Easy Runs,  Tempo Runs, Speed Runs, and I am adding some hill sessions as well, just to mix things up.

Races Completed:

  • 1/15: The Bay Area Track Club’s Test Your Resolution Road 5k [report]
    • Time: 25:40/ 8:16 pace. [A personal best!]
    • Placed:
      • Overall: 11/31
      • Men: 9/18
      • Age Bracket: 2/5

Upcoming Run(s):

GIDDY-UP!

My Slowest 4 Miles [so far]

January 31, 2012 — 1 Comment

In my continuing read of Hal Higdon’s, Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide, I’ve noted several areas in my training regimen that I need to change…

Today’s focus was: Training Pace

So, this morning I forced myself to run as close to the listed “easy run” pace for today’s session: 11:21

MANTRA: There is a reason for the various components of the training plan and the pacing as well – running at race pace or faster all the time won’t result in a good half or full marathon run. (as you can see, I’m thinking ahead…)

It was tough and I still ended up with an overall 10:49 pace – which is still a full minute slower than my average pace for a run of the same distance.  The splits for this morning’s 4-mile run were: 10:12, 11:11, 10:51, and 11:05 – at least I came close to 11 twice.

I felt like I was dragging, but kept telling myself that over a 13.1 or 26.2 mile run, learning this technique will result in negative splits and ultimately better times…

Who said running was simple, thoughtless, forward movement!

One side note: I finally broke down and bought some decent “running” socks – my poser sport socks just were not cutting it anymore.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!  [happy feet!  happy feet!]

Now to focus on the other laundry list of items from the book…

Training Journal – 1/31/12:

  • Current plan: 10K Training
  • Today’s session: 3 mile easy run
  • Comments: See above.  [i ran 4.46 vs. 3 – the balance of which probably qualifies as “junk miles” in the Higdon book!]

Yep Yep

Each day at our resort, hundreds of these Mynas wished us “Good Morning” and “Good Night.”

They seemed to like the courtyard of our tower the best!
