scream

August 17, 2013 — Leave a comment

the other day, my wife and i were talking and the recurring desire to just scream sometimes came up in the conversation…

today in safeway and OSH, i imagined doing just that…

several times…

it probably wouldn’t have gone over too well…

closed vehicles work well…

unoccupied homes with windows and doors securely closed too…

CHIP(PED)

July 29, 2013 — Leave a comment

t_crownQuite possibly related to my CHIP(S) post yesterday; somehow, last night, I chipped a crown eating a cracker…

What I though was salt crumbs, actually turned out to be the inside portion a crown!

A total bummer, since I just had my dental exam last week and got the “all clear” for six months.

Yipee…

Training Journal – 7/29/13:

  • Current plan: Mix of running and biking
  • Today’s session: 1-hour ride
  • Comments: I ended up riding for 1:14:51 for 21.17 miles @ 17.0 mph avg

Gonna have to think about the blender option at the end!

Training Journal – 7/10/13:

  • Current plan: Mix of running and biking
  • Today’s session: 60 minute bike ride
  • Comments: Somehow, I hit the road a bit earlier than usual, so I ended up riding for 1:17:43 for 20.1 miles @ 16.3 mph avg.

So today was my 48th birthday…aaaaand I’m on a business trip.

My being gone on my day happens occasionally because of one particular conference, the last time was two years ago. It’s weird and usually a bummer of a day none the less. I’m not big on getting attention, so I usually don’t let anyone know it’s my birthday…

Thankfully, with technology, I did get a bunch of b-day wishes today through Facebook and texts…which was nice to see throughout the day.

Anyway, I started my day early (0500) so I could get a long slow run in before my meetings started this afternoon. I usually do my long runs on Sunday, but there is a Women’s half marathon here in Chicago tomorrow and I knew it would be a madhouse along the Lakefront Trail…

20130622-190412.jpgI headed North out on Chicago’s Lakefront Trail and went to the northern end and back – 18.5 miles total, door-to-door. It felt pretty good. I modified my run-walk ratio to 3:1 today and that seemed to be better on my knee. I managed a 10:45 pace, obeying my doctor’s counsel about keeping it slow and ran on crushed rock paths when I could. There were tons of runners out later in the morning – I think prep training for the B of A Chicago Marathon kicked off today for a lot of clubs in the area.

The weather was excellent! Here are a few pictures from the run:

My friend Denise sent me a birthday text while I was on my run.

20130622-190445.jpg

Since I was running, I asked SIRI to read me the text. Here is the epic SIRI transcript:

Happy [birthday cake][birthday cake][birthday cake][birthday cake][birthday cake]
Birthday [short cake][short cake][short cake][short cake][short cake]!!!!
Treating yourself to something fun? [hamburger][hamburger][french fries][french fries][slice of pizza][slice of pizza]
Assuming you’re working today? [computer][computer][computer][mobile phone][mobile phone][mobile phone]

I totally started cracking up when it was read…!

20130622-185939.jpgThe rest of the day was spent either in my room chilling or in my meeting this afternoon. I hit a local burger place for dinner (by myself) and then headed to a mixer for the conference.

It was a bit of a different birthday…

Training Journal – 6/22/13:

  • Current plan: Not sure right now…since I am cleared to run, I want to find a run/race for July
  • Today’s session: 18 mile long run
  • Comments: I did 18.51 @ 10:45 min/mile pace. Felt good to run and the 3:1 run:walk ratio worked better than the 4:1. I’m still working on the race report for last week’s Half Marathon…hopefully I’ll finish it tomorrow evening.

My Weed Is Gone

June 12, 2013 — Leave a comment

What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Being the creature of habit that I am, my run routes vary little day-to-day.  Typically, the first 2.25 miles are the same.  After that, I can turn right for a 4-miler, go straight and make subsequent right turns at other points for 5, 6, 7, or 8-mile loops, or not turn for 10 to 20-mile out and backs.  I love it!

As I’ve shared before, and for as long as I can remember, at mile 1.8 I pass a barley-like foxtail weed that has grown in a crack on the side of the road.  It started out as a small plant; but, along with the others near it, has steadily grown to about waist height.  That weed has become part of my run…my day:

✓ Wake up
✓ Bathroom
✓ Gear up
✓ Stretch while Garmin locates GPS
✓ GO!
✓ At mile 1.8, do ritualistic, glance/touch of weed
_ …

Anyway, I was on my run this morning, nearing the mile-1.8, weed-glancing, check-that-off-the-list spot and BOOM:

it’s gone

My weed is gone!  All nearby weeds were gone!

Apparently, the city removed weeds from that section of road yesterday after 2+ years of their being an integral part of my morning run!  How dare they!

So, alas, I find myself looking for an alternative, ritualistic, glance/touch object now…

Training Journal – 6/12/13:

  • Current plan: San Francisco Marathon – 2nd Half Training Plan
  • Today’s session: 5-mile easy run
  • Comments: I did 5.13 at a 10:04 min/mi pace using a 4:1 run-walk ratio. Knee status: meh…  At 4.75 miles, it was bugging me so I switched to a 2m:30sec ratio for the final stretch.
I’ve been experimenting with KT Tape the last two days.  Actually, only this morning, since the stuff didn’t stick for my run yesterday.  We’ll see if that provides any help/relief.  I really do hope the knee returns to its old self at some point…soon.

This was a different week:

  • I was off work Monday for Memorial Day, so I went for a longer bike ride.
  • Had my first ‘tip over’ on my bike. Nothing serious, I didn’t get my left foot out of the clip soon enough when I leaned to punch the crosswalk button. Only injury was pride…
  • My knee was petty sore after my long run last Sunday and I probably shouldn’t have rode. It was more sore after ride…enough that I couldn’t disguise it anymore. (OK, running a 50K three weeks after a marathon with 88 miles run in between the two and 26 miles run & 51 miles biked after the 50k probably contributed.)
  • I went to the doctor on Tuesday to see about my knee. He didn’t think there was any significant injury, but put me on R&R for 10 days.
  • Did resistance band workouts for the rest of the week – I HATE THIS TYPE OF EXERCISE!
  • With no running or riding, I’m fighting against my running-enabled eating diet. I’m tracking, but am up two pounds this week, which I’m not happy about. I’m allowing myself five pounds, which is manageable.
  • After today, just four more days of rest. Hoping the knee heals – it does feel better. I’m looking forward to my test run on Friday – though I’ll admit, I am a bit nervous.
  • Strategized my options for the San Francisco Marathon – 2nd Half, which I AM running on June 16. I think I’ve got a few viable plans, depending upon my knee.
  • I’ve been pretty consumed at work with a big project. Oh, the joys of 11th hour challenges…
  • Between work, life in general, and not being able to run, I’ve been generally grumpy and in a funk. Gotta snap outta it!

“He used to be such a positive person.”

– said someone, somewhere, today about me

So, i’m generally a positive person; but, am pretty sure someone said that yesterday or today.

Soooo glad it’s Friday!!!

Nine more days…

Not the selfie I wanted to take today...

Not the selfie I wanted to take today; but, after much thought, remembering this article I read last week, limping around after yesterday’s ride/previous day’s run (it was hard to disguise), and talking with my wife: I went to see the doctor today about my right knee. He’s a cyclist, so I figure he would be the best place to start opposed to an urgent care place. [After hearing my story, he said, “50K!?!” and edited his notes to read “avid” runner… :)]

  • Diagnosis: After pressing, pulling, twisting, etc., he felt there was no obvious signs of a break or fracture and that there probably wasn’t any damage to muscles, tendons, or cartilage. He felt it is probably a strain (back from my 5/12 run and aggravated by everything since) – no need to x-ray it or do an MRI right now.
  • Treatment: No running for ten days. Take ibuprofen for the 10 day rest as well and ice the knee during the day at work and in the evening at home. When I asked if I could ride my bike, he said, “Do you train half-way?” I said, “No.” He said, “Then rest that way.” After 10 days, I’m to go for a run, see how it feels, and we will go from there. Hopefully, he said, I won’t need to come back and see him. I’m hoping for that too!

So, no running (or riding) for ten days. I’m bummed, but glad it appears to be just a strain and know that resting is the best thing.

I’m working on alternatives to keep active…

Training Journal – 5/28/13:

  • Current plan: San Francisco Marathon – 2nd Half Training Plan
  • Today’s session: 4 mile easy run @ 8:41-9:41
  • Comments: Rest day called because of my knee – which now counts as day 1/10…

Thaaaaaatwouldbeme.

Day four of no running as a result of this stomach virus thing that’s kicked my behind.  I went to the doctor today and he said to give it time, befriend Imodium, stay hydrated, and watch what I eat…which I’m doing.  My biggest fear has been that I caught a parasite or something after filling my handheld during my run in Alum Rock Park last Sunday (OK, I did use a potable water spigot; but still, imagine the visuals I’ve had!)  The doc said he doubted that was the case, but gave me a lab chit just in case things don’t improve by next Tuesday or so (maybe he was just humoring me!) 😉

Twitch?  Yeah, this is the longest I’ve gone without a run since October 2011.  Yeah, I know those things and I did just twitch a bit.

Anyway, I’m hopeful for tomorrow…!
